* * *

Rachel was sure her heart was breaking as she reentered her house to the sound of Daley’s sobs for “Moosey” and observed Jake frantically working over the dog.

After their marriage, he’d given up his dream of veterinarian college and taken a job locally to support her and the family they wanted to have right away. When the children hadn’t come in the first few years, she’d urged him to go back to school. He hadn’t, believing God would soon give them the desires of their hearts.

When she’d finally gotten pregnant, they’d both rejoiced and basked in the goodness of a loving God as they eagerly prepared for their baby. They’d made wonderful plans for little Samuel as soon as they knew his gender, including his name which meant “God has heard.” They’d made lists of the characteristics they planned to instill in him: godliness, integrity, wisdom, kindness and more.

He was to be their first shining accomplishment.

Instead, his too-short life had become the disappointment she could not let go of.

Jake had never complained about working at the local bank. He’d done well there and been promoted twice. But now she could see that animal medicine was his passion, his gift, his calling.

Using the rudimentary supplies in his go-bag, he worked diligently to stop the flow of Moose’s blood and to stabilize the broken leg.

“Is there any way I can help you?” Leaving Daley, whose sobs had subsided to occasional sniffs, Rachel stepped up next to Jake.

Forehead glistening with sweat, he cast a worried glance toward Daley and then said, “He needs X-rays. We should get him to the clinic.”

“I’ll keep Daley here if you want to take Moose.”

His look was as sharp as his words. “No. She goes with me.”

“Okay.” She tried to understand instead of being offended.

He’d had an awful scare. They both had. Her own adrenaline still pumped like a geyser. She could only imagine how much worse his fear would be.

Starting to back away, she stopped when he said, “Come with me. I may need your help.”

Some of her hurt feelings settled. “I’ll open the truck doors and come back for Daley.”

She hurried out and then back inside. Daley waited for her at the door, slender arms up. Her little body still trembled from the trauma.

Rachel lifted her and held the house door open with her hip to let Jake and the too-still dog exit first.

He placed Moose in the bed of the truck and cushioned him with the towels.

“Will he be all right back there?” She worried the dog would jump out.

“He’ll be more comfortable there than crowded onto a seat.” Face grim, he added, “He’s too injured and in shock to move around on his own.”

Rachel’s stomach clenched. Aching with concern, she buckled Daley into her car seat, patted her cheek with an assurance that everything would be okay, and climbed into the cab without Jake’s hand to steady her.

At the moment, he had those gifted hands full. Courtesy was the last thing on their minds.
